  • [13:11:11] <rmoriz> so as you may remember I demoed the bone to the fablab audience. seems javascript is not yet popular, but people were interested in the hardware (also showed the -xM and a PandaBoard). Most are interested in the "raspberry" and have not heard much about linux capable ARM boards yet (but they knew that there's something like "BeagleBoard"). Arduino is there "native environment".
  • [13:12:42] <koen> I know I'm biased, the but raspberry fails to excite me
  • [13:12:47] <rmoriz> but it's a very nice, friendly group with a very good toolset. So I'll probably join and build "my own" project :)
  • [13:12:48] <koen> underpower oversubsidized
  • [13:13:46] <rmoriz> yes
  • [13:13:58] <rmoriz> the intention behind it is the usage in school classes
  • [13:14:17] <rmoriz> also the fablab has some cooperation with schools so that's probably the reason they know about it
  • [13:15:56] <rmoriz> some of them are focussed on doing art-projects, that's why they have a lot of arduino knowhow

  • [13:16:45] <DJWillis> Yep, Raspberry has a lot of pull in the education markets but considering the hertige and the strong ties (in the UK) to education that is not a supprise. It does seem very oversubsidized for what it is. I guess it's about gaining hearts and minds with cash ;).
  • [13:17:37] <rmoriz> i wonder what the device will run. i think a good, easy to use software foundation is the key
  • [13:18:04] <rmoriz> that's why the cloud9+node combo is awesome, imho
  • [13:19:11] <rmoriz> from what i read they (raspberry) still have not decided which distribution to use. that probably means they will not have resources to build something like that on top of it soon
  • [13:19:55] <DJWillis> rmoriz: I also think they are hoping for a groundswell of support a'la Beagle to get it going.
  • [13:20:00] <rmoriz> ok. compiling node/v8 + cloud9 is not a big deal but someone has to write an interface mapping like bonescript

  • [13:22:37] <rmoriz> from a "commercial" perspective it's a good plan to keep the price low for the moment. if it gets a approved in country-wide education, you can sell lots of the devices over the next couple of years ;-)
